FRESH VEGETABLES,
GROWN ON ROOFS IN REFUGEE CAMPS
.
Women in Palestinian refugee camps struggle day. Struggle to get food on the table. Struggle to keep their children safe & healthy. Struggle to keep their own head up high. Surrounded by concrete walls, checkpoints and illegal settlements a rooftop greenhouse can become a green safe haven for the women in the Palestinian community. There will not just grow cucumbers... there will grow dignity and pride |

LOCAL PRODUCTION - LED BY WOMEN
Rooftop greenhouses not only create a beautiful green space; they can feed families. Not only do greenhouses feed families; they can be the starting point of a social business, led by refugee women.
Cucumber, tomatoes, parsley, mint, courgette, green beans and others are all growing in the plastic-covered greenhouses. Small tubes with soil fill up the space, connected through a water drip system with a water tank minimize use of precious resources.

PERSONAL POWERWorking in the green space and participating in the training has a positive effect on the emotional well-being of the women

GREEN SPACESafe spaces to relax and enjoy nature are hard to come by in the camps, making the greenhouses preferred meeting places.

FEEDING THE FAMILYGardens established in Deheishe Camp have shown that the year round production can provide families with nutritious fresh produce.
|
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITYThe women are growing the gardens into a profitable social enterprise by adding value to their raw product.

KARAMA ORGANIZATION
dignity for Palestinian refugees
Karama Organization was established in 2002 in Deheishe Camp, Palestine amidst the violence of the Second Intifada. Since then, the community center and organized activities have become a well-known safe place of women and children of the local community.
Karama - meaning 'dignity' - aims to restore a sense of dignity in and among our people so we can build together towards a dignified and resilient Palestinian society. We target to improve the lives of women and children in the camp through broadening and supporting their educational options and fuel their abilities, skills and creativity. This is done by enabling projects that encourage own initiative, self-reliance and create a young leadership, with the rooftop greenhouses being one of these.
