A Community Bakery A Social Enterprise
Palestinians are eager to create jobs and sustainable income for themselves, but with a broken economy and disadvantaged position, this is especially hard for refugees and even more;
for our women. One in three of the refugees is unemployed and a huge part of the women look for safe employment opportunities to contribute to their family's prosperity. Karama is also highly concerned about the dominant food patterns among our children, where snacks high in sugar and unhealthy additives are the norm. Through this bakery, Karama will not only create job opportunities for the neediest women in the refugee camp but also spread more awareness on a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Bisan stayed home after completing her high-school as her family couldn't afford her education. While she has many interests, she never managed to make it into paid employment. As now she sees her own family struggling every month, she grasps the opportunity to work and contribute to both her family & community with both hands!

We have grown to become an entire social enterprise benefiting refugee women and their families.
Makken meaning to empower is the purpose from this social enterprise. We are a production line of Palestinian food products including a variety of pickles, jams, dairy products and herbs. In our bakery and kitchen, we prepare traditional Palestinian meals, pastries and sweets, all prepared by the hands of well trained refugee women. All this is attached to a modern store where all these products are available, aside to fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, organic healthy products and a variety of groceries. Makken works to provide these products on reasonable price for the local refugee who is in need of saving money in such difficult living conditions. |

This initiative is closely connected with Karama's Rooftop Greenhouse project that will deliver fresh produce, and contribute to a movement of healthy, organic production amidst the misery of the refugee camp.

The bakery is supported by a generous donation from Penny Appeal UK.
